Serpents of the Archipelago is a richly illustrated visual storybook that combines science with personal storytelling to explore the extraordinary diversity and natural history of Indonesia's snakes. With over 17,000 islands spanning three biogeographic regions, the Indonesian archipelago is home to over 300 known snake species, along with many yet to be described by science.
Drawing on years of field experience, photography, and a synthesis of scientific literature, the book presents an engaging introduction to these often misunderstood animals, for readers of all backgrounds. The facts in this book are intertwined with a number of personal anecdotes, written by Indonesian herpetologist Nathan Rusli, who has dedicated his life to studying the snakes of this region, and is also well-known for his photography and distinct storytelling style.
Beginning with accessible chapters on snake taxonomy, evolution, and anatomy, it continues with a section describing the biogeographic history of the Indonesian archipelago, before introducing the country's snake families, and concluding with a chapter that examines the complex relationship between snakes and people.
By making scientific knowledge accessible, visually engaging, and emotionally relatable, this book aims to foster a deeper appreciation for Indonesia's remarkable snake fauna, and ultimately inspire greater support for their research and conservation.

The third edition of the Sinhala language book 'Snake of Sri Lanka' will be launched in October 2026. This comprehensive, nearly 400-page edition is co-authored with devoted herpetologists Sanoj Wijayasekara and Sanjaya Bandara.
It features specialized chapters written by leading experts, including Prof. Anjana Silva (snake venom), Dr. Kanishka Ukuwela (phylogenetics), Dr. Thasun Amarasinghe (morphometrics), and Dr. Thaveesha de Alwis (look-alike snakes). The book is packaged in a splendid cover illustrated by the award-winning designer Kasun Benaragama.
