Sri Lanka's wildlife is strictly protected by national law. Every species of snake, whether venomous or not, is safeguarded under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance (FFPO, No. 2 of 1937). Participants of the World Snake Congress are reminded that unauthorized handling, collecting, or transporting of any wild animal, plant, or specimen is illegal.
All wildlife offences are treated seriously. The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) and the Police have the authority to inspect, confiscate, and prosecute offenders. Penalties include heavy fines, imprisonment, and confiscation of equipment or vehicles.
Sri Lanka is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, and its environmental protection laws are among the strictest in Asia. The Congress encourages all visitors to enjoy the country's rich wildlife responsibly and lawfully—by observing, not intervening.
